Building clean energy infrastructure to the pace and scale needed faces many challenges, but in recent years these challenges have been shifting from technical and economic toward a complex mix of social and institutional barriers. While many communities continue to say “yes” to renewables, there are growing numbers saying “no”, calling into question whether current siting policies and engagement practices will be able to support the several-fold increase in renewable energy needed to meet climate and clean energy goals. In this precursor program to our ACP Siting and Permitting Conference, this panel of researchers and practitioners will explore the efficacy of where and how siting decisions are made and approaches to planning and community engagement that would best support just decision-making and accelerate renewable energy deployment. Panelists will share and discuss insights from Science of Siting, a two-part workshop series hosted by Clean Air Task Force (CATF), in partnership with the University of Michigan’s Graham Sustainability Institute in Fall of 2023.

During this webinar, attendees will:

 - Gain a broader understanding on the complexity and nuance of social and institutional barriers to siting renewable energy

- Lean about the valuable interplay between social science and practice

- Hear about innovative new ideas and approaches to policy, planning, and practice around siting clean energy
